Why I photograph newborns editorially — and what that means for you

By Jessica Durden

There are a lot of ways to photograph a newborn, and most of them are beautiful. The one I chose — editorial, quiet, neutral — wasn't because it's trendy. It's because it ages the best.

Photos of newborns propped into elaborate setups are charming. They're also very much of their moment. The headband that matched the 2017 nursery doesn't match anything now. Neutral, editorial portraits — your baby's features, the texture of the wrap, the way they curl into your chest — those never date.

Neutral palettes age without effort.

What you'll see in your gallery

Softly lit portraits of your baby alone — detail shots of tiny fingers, eyelashes, the curl of ears. Images of you holding them. Images of your partner holding them. A few sibling frames if you have older kids. Nothing busy, nothing cluttered.

The kind of photos you'll frame, and your grandchildren will want to keep.
