A gentle newborn prep guide — what to expect, what to bring, what to wear
By Jessica Durden
If you're reading this tired and overwhelmed, I'm glad you're here. Newborn sessions don't have to be stressful — mine never are. Here's what it actually looks like, so you can stop worrying and save what little sleep you have left.
When to book
The sweet spot for classic newborn imagery is the first 7–14 days. After that, babies become more alert — which is wonderful, but it's a different kind of session. I keep the calendar flexible around due dates, so reach out in your second trimester if you can. I'll pencil you in and we'll confirm the exact date once your baby arrives.

What to wear
Neutrals. Soft cream, warm taupe, dusty sage, gentle peach. Avoid logos and crisp-white tees (they can blow out under soft light). I have a small wardrobe of wraps and simple dresses you're welcome to borrow. If you want, send me a picture of your bedroom or your living room and I'll suggest palettes that will frame beautifully in your home.
What to bring
Just baby. I bring everything else — the wraps, the poser, the neutral blankets, the white-noise machine, a small heater for the posing area. If there's a specific heirloom you'd like in a few frames (a knit blanket your mother made, a tiny sibling ring) bring that too.

The day of
Feed your baby right before I arrive. Keep the room warm — around 78°F is ideal. Skip caffeine before the session if you can (it passes through breastmilk and revs the baby up). And please, please don't stress about tidying. I'll never photograph your laundry.
If you're not sure about something — anything — just email me. No question is silly. This is important to me because it's important to you.
